Kita at the Technische Universität Berlin

Science and technology are our educational focus. We have been a "House of Little Scientists" since 2006. Welcome to the day care centre at the Technische Universität!

Our day care center at a glance

The day care center is located on the northern campus of TU (Technical University), only a few minutes to walk from Ernst-Reuter-Platz and the underground line U2. We offer space for up to 112 children from eight weeks to school entry.

In every child, there is a need to explore the world, learn about new things, and to express oneself. We see it as one of our core tasks to accompany the children sensitively and to offer them an explorative field that corresponds with their respective ages and level of development.

Our focus lies on intercultural competences and on the fields of "nature, environment, and technology". Our day care center sees itself as an institution that helps children explore the fun in discovering, experimenting, exploring, and trying out. A wide range of materials invite them to do so. Our house is always open for the creativity and imagination of the children. We take up their ideas and offer them support to explore and further shape the world we all live in.

We encourage and support the children's need to expand their own abilities. This is how we understand our entire profile: Dupporting the children’s curiosity and discovery spirit in all areas of the day care life.

Directly in front of the day care center is our 1200 m² playground. There are plenty of toys, large sand areas, a water pump system, a roadway and the shadows of a large number of trees and shrubs.

Up to 48 small children from 0 to 3 years are cared for in an extra nursery area. It has four group rooms, a sleeping room and two washrooms, a play hall, a large balcony and two wardrobes. The group rooms are designed to inspire children to discover, climb and play. For this purpose, the children have a variety of materials and toys, such as building blocks, stuffed animals, picture books, shape and grab games, sorting boxes and rhythm instruments. The differently designed corners serve to stimulate the senses of the children. There are game plateaus in each of the rooms.

Up to 64 children, from those aged 3 years to those starting school, are cared for in the mixed-age group. For this, we have created various function areas and corners. These give opportunities to play, be creative, discover and experiment, to move around and to rest. The mixed-age area has game rooms, a studio area, a dress-up corner, a research area and a sleeping and quiet room. The materials are mostly visible and accessible to the children, so their natural curiosity is awakened again and again.

Outdoor Activities

Our day care center is attended by children who come from all over Berlin. Therefore, it is important for us to make trips to the surrounding area. We like to take the children to the Einsteinufer (river bank) and the Spree river, to the Tiergarten park, to the Tiergarten sluice and to the zoo. Other favorite places of the children are the Pippi Longstocking playground, the nearby Ziegenhof communal center and the charming Hexenhaus at the Spree canal. We buy ingredients for cooking and baking. Visiting the parents' workplaces and the children's homes give them the opportunity to experience the diversity of international work and cultures.

Festivals and Celebrations

In the course of a day care year, we have many opportunities to celebrate. Feasts are important to us because they offer us a break in our everyday routines, are fun and leave us with beautiful memories. For our preschool children there is an annual children's festival in the "Freiraum" - the event hall of the culture department of  studierendenWERK.

Sports and Exercise

It is important to us that the children move a lot. We often visit our playground where the children can romp, climb, swing, slide, dig and explore nature in almost every weather condition. We regularly go to the gym at the Technical University and cooperate with a swimming club for children’s swimming classes. Once a year our older children can join the Bambini Run in the Tiergarten park. It is a great communal experience for them to run about 800 meters through the park together.

Cooperation project with Ackerdemia e.V.

According to its profile "nature, environment, technology", the day care center planned raised beds together with the Ackerdemia e.V., where the children can try out gardening and observe the growth of various plants. If the project goes well, the kindergarten children will be able to harvest lots of vegetables and herbs in the future. A first planting campaign has started in May.
