What does a study assistant actually do?

About an unusual part-time job...

Study assistants support students with chronic illnesses or disabilities in their everyday university life. They fetch books from the top shelves, read aloud texts that are printed too small, or encourage fellow students with mental illnesses to participate in group work.

Students who have a disability that makes studying difficult can apply for inclusion services at studierendenWERK BERLIN. This can be reading software, a sign language interpreter or a book allowance, for example because they need to print texts in larger font. However, many simply need someone to accompany and support them during their everyday university life – a so-called study assistant. Study assistance is a part-time job for students, but there are a few requirements that must be met. The fee is currently 16 euros per hour since the 1st of April – however, you must register as a part-time self-employed person.

Our Counselling Centre for Barrier-free Studies provides advice on how all this works and also offers regular information workshops. Our information page also gives interested students an initial insight into the most important facts. Just click on it to find out more!
