According to the definition provided by the University of Potsdam, subcultures are “identifiable segments of society as a whole that differ from it in certain respects but are nonetheless subject to certain laws and rules of society as a whole.” Thematically and in terms of identity, subcultures can center around a wide variety of things: for example, punks, pub culture, East Berlin bohemia, techno, fanzines, youth culture, the squatter scene, literary, philosophical, and activist groups, or underground magazines.
The workshop is divided into three sessions (exact times to be announced) and a reading:
- June 6-7, each day 12-2 pm: Field trip, input, and visit
- June 16, 5-7 pm: Brainstorming
- July 4-5, each day 12-2 pm: Text work and planning the reading
- Reading (probably July 8)

Sidney Kaufmann has participated in programs for emerging writers led by Caca Savic, Monika Rinck, Lutz Seiler, and Felicitas Hoppe, among others. He has worked as an assistant at Berlin theaters, is a freelance journalist, and is studying at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig; in the summer semester of 2025, he led the writing workshop “The Splendor and Misery of Berlin: Potsdamer Straße.”
Arjan Wendrich is studying philosophy and psychology at the FU and IPU; previously studied philosophy and German literature at the HU; participated in the emerging writers’ program with Felicitas Hoppe.
