Course: Experimental Drawing goes Museum

Explore Berlin's museums and experiment with different drawing techniques.

This course isn’t about drawing as “beautifully” or as realistically as possible. On the contrary: We want to consciously challenge conventional ideas of what a drawing should look like and break free from our own perfectionism. We’ll experiment with unusual materials and techniques, change the way we work, and engage with chance, constraints, and different forms of perception.

Every two weeks, various Berlin museums become an extension of our classroom. We’ll visit different collections and exhibitions—ranging from natural history to Old Masters and ancient sculptures to contemporary art and technology.

We’ll be drawing on site, observing, gathering ideas, interpreting and developing our own drawing approaches to the things we encounter.

Between museum visits, we’ll return to the classroom to reflect on the experiences we’ve had there. We’ll continue to experiment, develop drawings from our sketches and impressions, and try out new techniques and methods.

The course is aimed at anyone who fancies discovering a new way of drawing – regardless of prior knowledge or supposed ‘talent for drawing’.
