Creative LAB: (Self-)publishing with Gonçalo Sena

48 hours on (self-)publishing and DIY processes - Workshop in englisch and german

“To do it the analogue way bears some advantages because self-publishing is not about spreading. It’s about autonomy.” – Gloria Glitzer, 2015

To self-publish, at its core, encompasses not only the edition, the layout, the production and the public release of a determined publication format, but moreover, the freedom to do it without permission or validation from any external entity, namely institutional or, so called, established.

This practice can take many forms and extend itself in time and space in various ways. It often enables unconventional editorial decisions, organic economies and means of production, irregular print runs, and unexpected forms of distribution, thus contributing to the synergy of peer (self-)publishers.

This two day workshop led by Gonçalo Sena, aims to reflect on self-publishing as an art practice. By exploring the intersections between these two fields, participants are invited to translate their practices into a printed format, by experimenting within an editorial collective work process. The outcome will be printed in risography by Moritz Grünke at his studio in Wedding, Berlin.

Registration takes place online and starts now. A binding registration is only possible for students of our partner universities.

Gonçalo Sena is sculptor, book designer and publisher. Through the use of industrial materials, organic elements and found objects, Sena’s sculptures and spatial assemblages reflect on topics such as material (im)permanence, vernacular construction and displacement scenography. As a publisher, he co-founded the collective ATLAS Projectos in 2008, currently managed by Sena and Nuno da Luz. All publications are designed by the collective, and edited in close collaboration with the authors, artists, writers, and editors. Each project follows its own logic of production and print run.
