What to consider when applying for a room at studierendenWERK

When moving to Berlin, there are some important things to know...

Things you need to know about housing

Got your confirmation for university? Congratulations!
When you go to Berlin to study, you need to know a few important things about housing.

There is no guarantee for accommodation in a hall of residence.

Unlike in other countries, it is not guaranteed that a place of study is automatically accompanied by accommodation in a hall of residence. The universities do not have their own halls of residence and the studierendenWERK, which is an independent organization, does not have enough places for the 175,000 students who live in Berlin. Therefore, there are very long waiting periods for our rooms. Please be aware that you may have to look for alternatives on the free market. We have compiled an overview of the other landlords in Berlin who let students live with them. Please follow this >> link.

Equipment and price vary

However, we are looking foward to your application. Applications will only be accepted online. The video on this page explains what you need to consider when applying.

The 32 halls of residence of the studierendenWERK are spread all over Berlin. Only a few of them are located directly on the campus of one of the 20 universities we cooperate with. You will have to accept travel distances. With your semester fee, you have automatically purchased a ticket for public transportation, which you can use throughout the semester.

Please be aware: Our houses are very different in their equipment, location and therefore in their price.
In order to find the right accommodation for you, please visit our website for detailed information about the different halls of residence. Our search mask will help you. Please follow this >> link.

Information for program students
