How to Succeed at Job Interviews in Germany

Interactive Workshop for International Students

Job interviews can feel like a lot to manage, especially when you're not sure what German employers expect or how the process might differ from what you're familiar with. The norms around self-presentation, how to talk about your experience, and what "confident but not overconfident" actually looks like in a German context aren't always clear. Developing a solid understanding of what employers are looking for and how to present yourself effectively makes it much easier to go into an interview prepared.

In this workshop we’ll explore what German employers look for in interviews and what good self-presentation looks like in this context. We'll work through how to introduce yourself and how to talk about your background in a way that's relevant to the role, and we'll practise self-introductions and typical interview questions. We'll also discuss how to handle the moments that feel less certain: language challenges, unexpected questions, or situations where you're not quite sure what's expected of you.

  • What does a typical job interview in Germany look like, and what should I expect?
  • What do German employers want to see from a candidate, and how might that differ from what I'm used to?
  • How do I introduce myself in a way that's confident without coming across as overconfident?
  • How do I talk about my experience so it's relevant to the role I'm applying for?
  • What questions am I likely to be asked, and how do I prepare for them?
  • How do I handle language challenges or moments where I'm not sure what's expected?
  • What do I need to know about virtual interviews?

Participants will leave with a solid understanding of what German employers expect in interviews, a clear structure for introducing themselves and talking about their experience, and some practical methods for managing the moments that feel uncertain.
