The "I" in Academic Writing [Only in German]

Forbidden or not?

The word "I" is surprisingly controversial in academic writing. On the one hand, term papers and theses are expected to present a clear authorial voice and a distinct perspective. On the other hand, the use of the first-person singular is often considered inappropriate or "unacademic."

In this workshop, we will explore the rationale behind—and the limitations of—this convention. What kinds of mistakes does the avoidance of "I" intend to prevent? And conversely, when can the usage of "I" actually support clear thinking and stronger academic writing?

The workshop includes a few short writing exercises. Please bring your preferred writing materials.
