If it's meat, then it's of quality

The menu of the studierendenWERKs is predominantly plant-based. However, we do not completely give up animal products.

Less, but better.

Since October 2021, our menu has primarily consisted of plant-based dishes. The standard offering basically includes a selection of vegan or vegetarian dishes, with only a meat dish on Tuesdays and Thursdays and a fish dish on Fridays. Depending on the size of the facility, canteens also have promotional stands where you can find, for example, wok pans, pizzas or curries prepared live. There can also sometimes be meat dishes here, such as burgers or currywurst.
Students often ask us why our meat dishes are more expensive than elsewhere. We stand by the fact that meat dishes are more expensive than plant-based ones. Because if the quality of the meat is right, it also has its price.
We source our meat as follows:

Pork

We only source pork from farming method 4.

Our supplier is Hof Markelwitz. This is located in northeast Lower Saxony. The animals have exercise and 24/7 access to food. The food is GMO- and soy-free, and the use of prophylactic medications is prohibited.

The slaughter takes place in Brandenburg.

Beef

The animals live in a natural environment, have guaranteed access to the outdoors and are provided with perfect, nutrient-rich food.

Animal husbandry forms and what they mean

Level 4 (Premium)

In housing type 4, animals have constant access to an outdoor run or it is directly free-range. The food is without genetic engineering. Organic meat, for example, can be classified in this level.

Level 3 (outside climate)

This does not mean free-range farming, but rather contact with the outside air, for example through an open side of the stable or a covered outdoor area. Feed is prescribed without genetic engineering.

Not in studierendenWERK: Level 2 (stable keeping)

Animals usually have a little more space in the stable and additional activity material. Cows, for example, are not allowed to be tied up.

Not in studierendenWERK: Level 1 (stable keeping)

Level 1 is the minimum standard required by law in Germany.
