Berlin, 07. January 2024
The Senate Administration has decided to increase the social fee, which all students pay as part of their semester fee to studierendenWERK BERLIN, from the current amount of 63 euros to 85 euros starting in the summer semester 2025 (April 1, 2025). This step is necessary to secure the continued existence of studierendenWERK BERLIN and its extensive services for students.
Why is the social fee being increased?
As part of Berlin’s budget cuts, studierendenWERK BERLIN has faced a reduction of 6.5 million euros in state funding, equivalent to 30% of the originally pledged amount. To mitigate the severe effects of this reduction, the contribution from Berlin’s students must increase by 22 euros, effective from the summer semester 2025.
Despite the fee increase, a funding gap remains that can only be addressed through additional cost-saving measures. The new fee of 85 euros does not fully offset the financial losses. Therefore, the already announced measures will remain in place:
-
The price of the daily meal in our canteens will increase to 1.75 euros.
-
The closure of the bakery shops at HU Spandauer Straße and HfM Marstall as well as the canteen at TU Architektur will remain in effect.
Further measures to close the remaining funding gap are currently being developed, with a focus on minimizing the impact on students.
What is the social fee used for?
The social fee is a solidarity contribution that all students are legally required to pay. It ensures that studierendenWERK BERLIN can maintain the following services for students:
-
Catering: Healthy and diverse meals in canteens at affordable student prices.
-
Housing: Provision of affordable accommodation in our dormitories.
-
Advisory Services: Expert guidance on topics such as student financing, studying with children, studying with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses, academic writing, and psychological support.
-
Skills Development: Workshops, training sessions, and lectures to enhance academic skills (e.g., time management, balancing studies and part-time jobs).
-
Inclusion: Cultural events and get-togethers to help students settle in Berlin and make friends.
-
Childcare: Support for childcare at campus-adjacent daycare centers.
These services are crucial for enhancing the quality of life and academic success of Berlin’s students, making student life in one of Germany’s most expensive cities more affordable.
Our Goal
StudierendenWERK BERLIN is committed to maintaining its services for students to the best of its ability, despite the challenging financial circumstances. We recognize the burden that the fee increase places on students and thank everyone for their understanding and solidarity during these difficult times. Together, we aim to sustain a strong and comprehensive range of services for students in Berlin.
