The studierendenWERK BERLIN is responsible for Berlin students and tailors its offerings to their needs. The target group is young, academically educated and has a high affinity for modern communication technology. The proportion of international students (some of whom have to speak English) is around a fifth. Every semester a new generation arrives on campus. A classic “regular customer” knows this studierendenWERK BERLIN  not due to these rapid changes.

The total of 102 facilities of the studierendenWERKs BERLIN are distributed decentrally throughout the city. They are located close to the 20 cooperating universities and the Charité. The central administration is based in Charlottenburg, in the immediate vicinity of the University of the Arts and the Technical University.

Im studierendenWERK There are a variety of working time regulations. Working hours for full-time employment are 39 hours per week.

For the majority of office workplaces, a flexitime regulation applies from 6 a.m. to 20 p.m. with a core time of 3 to 4,5 hours. In some areas, core hours can be extended through office hours.

Working hours in the canteens, coffee bars and daycare centers are regulated by duty rosters.

Weekend assignments are rare, but certainly possible.

The Wages for the employees of the studierendenWERKs BERLIN are regulated in the “collective agreement for the takeover of the TVöD for the Studentenwerk Berlin (takeover TV Studentenwerk Berlin)”.

There are open-plan offices studierendenWERK BERLIN not. Our offices are staffed by 1 - 3 employees and equipped with ergonomic work equipment. This includes precisely fitting office chairs, partially height-adjustable desks and the right room lighting.

The employees in the kitchens receive work clothes, which are cleaned studierendenWERK takes over.

We have equipped our kitchens with air conditioning, ventilation systems and the latest technology. Ergonomic work aids such as pallet trucks make everyday life easier for employees.

Additional meeting rooms enable undisturbed exchanges for working groups and committees.

Numerous colleagues also volunteer in the organization. You can work with us as a trainer, first aider, fire protection assistant or safety officer. We also offer training for these functions.

I like working in studierendenWERK, because...

“… I make an important contribution to the students’ individual cultural education. We often receive positive feedback from our target group. The students are very grateful that they find support for their extracurricular projects from us, that we encourage their creativity with our activities, and that we give them the opportunity to live diversity and get to know other students. Plus, my team is fantastic! The company offers very good employee support, which enables us to maintain and further develop our skills.”

“…my work is valued here and I feel valued as a contact person. I like to make things happen for and with my team. It's important to me that I have the support of my managers; that makes acting a lot easier. The “new” mobile working is used and appreciated by many colleagues in our area. This is only possible if there is a basis of trust. Beautiful moments arise when we complete construction projects and provide students with contemporary student apartments. I always look back fondly on these successes with my team.”

“...I think the service we provide for the city's students is a good thing. My work area is very varied, every day brings new challenges. The positive feedback I receive is additional motivation for me. In addition, my supervisor is always willing to listen to me, and my colleagues are very friendly and helpful. The flexitime arrangement enables me to reconcile my family and professional situation. I enjoy coming to work every day!”

“...here (Kita at the UdK) there is a great working atmosphere among the colleagues and the employer also does a lot for the employees, for example offering regular massages. Working with children presents me with new challenges every day. No day is like the other. I like to observe the developmental steps of the children. When I finally send them off to school, it feels good to know that I have made a contribution to their development. That makes me very proud."

Fabian Grimm, educator

“… I can implement a large part of my calling here. Supporting colleagues when they return to work after long illnesses and raising awareness of their own health is a valuable and (usually) valued activity. The diversity among the over 1.100 colleagues in particular makes my work very varied. For me, collegial and appreciative collaboration are two further valuable aspects that I experience here in my everyday work. The recently revised mission statement from studierendenWERK strengthens my feeling of being part of the whole.”

“… I deal with many people in my facility every day and can deal with a wide variety of characters. Here I also have the opportunity to face different challenges again and again in order to ensure everything runs smoothly. The positive feedback that I receive as a supervisor from my employees further motivates me. My goal every day is for our guests to leave the cafeteria feeling refreshed and satisfied. The flexible working hours enable me to balance work and family.”

Nicole Lau, housekeeping team leader at the FU II cafeteria

“…I cook in our cafeteria every day with fresh regional products and an emphasis on sustainability. New trends and changes are proactively established, for example with the construction of the first vegan cafeteria. A family-friendly working atmosphere also applies to me as a supervisor. In addition, I am not only challenged with my tasks, but also supported. I like the young guest clientele who are interested in nutrition. His positive feedback motivates me and spurs me on day after day.”

Andrew Hoffman, Head of the cafeteria at the TU/UdK
