“I’d never really given much thought to how I’d die – but dying in the Allgäu? That would never have crossed my mind.”
Isabella Schwan, a perfectly normal (!) girl, is enjoying life in Mallorca – until her mum Renate marries Paul, a third-division footballer, and hands Bella – along with her favourite palm tree – over to her dad. Her father Karl is the village constable in Oberstdorf in the Allgäu, the rainiest place in Germany, where not even a special episode of *Tatort* would venture. Needless to say, this isn’t particularly appealing to a sun-kissed 17-year-old. Until she meets the mysterious Eduard Keuler whilst peeling onions: the Keulers are magically alluring, mysterious, sexy and (if you believe Bella’s childhood friend, Jakob Schwarz, ‘the Walser wolf in sheep’s clothing’), abysmally evil. Or you might not believe him and let Eduard Keuler (who describes himself as a ‘sick, masochistic lion’) invite you out for a meal. He won’t bite, he just wants to play. Or will he?
