Ways into Jewish Berlin

City walk - possibly including a visit to the Centrum Judaicum

Since the 18th century, the Spandauer suburbs developed into the center of Berlin's Jewish community - until the Nazis exterminated it. Few people with any knowledge find the site of the first synagogue; in the oldest Jewish cemetery only a symbolic grave reminds of the Enlightenment philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Today the tradition of the quarter is continued: Centrum Judaicum, Jewish school, kosher food. But "normality" is difficult to achieve. Fears on the one hand and misunderstandings on the other still characterize a difficult relationship.
