Dreams can also function on a collective level, for example as an empowering wish for the future. A dream can also bring groups together to develop alternatives to current reality. A utopia can thus release forces to get along with the present, to imagine a “fairer” future and to fight for it. As a political model of society in literature,
Film and science have been accompanying us in utopias and dystopias for a long time. But what is a utopia for some becomes a dystopia for others. This perspective depends on our social position. Utopian and dystopian living conditions do not arise in a vacuum, but are always determined by prevailing power structures, such as the capitalist world order, patriarchy and white supremacy. These collective dreams can temporarily be thought of as a “utopia” until those power structures are abolished.
What influences our dreams? How do dreams become reality? When does a utopia become a dystopia?
