Creative LAB: (Self-)publishing with Gonçalo Sena

48 hours on (self-)publishing and DIY processes - Workshop in English and German

"The analogue route has some advantages because self-publishing is not about distribution. It's about autonomy." - Gloria glitter, 2015

At its core, self-publishing not only includes the publication, layout, production and distribution of a specific publication format, but also the freedom to do this without permission or confirmation from an external, institutional or so-called 'established authority'.

This practice can take many forms and extend in different ways across time and space. It often enables unconventional editorial decisions, organic economies and means of production, irregular print runs and unexpected forms of distribution and thus contributes to the emergence of creative networks and synergies between equal (self-)publishers.

This two-day workshop led by Gonçalo Sena aims to reflect on self-publishing as an artistic practice. Commonalities and intersections between these two areas will be explored and participants will have the opportunity to transfer their artistic ideas and concepts into a printed format by experimenting within a collective editorial work process. The result is printed as risography by Moritz Grünke in his studio in Wedding, Berlin.

Registration:
Registration takes place online and begins 4 weeks before the workshop date. It is only for our students Partner universities is possible.

Gonçalo Sena is sculptor, book designer and publisher. Through the use of industrial materials, organic elements and found objects, Sena's sculptures and spatial assemblages reflect on topics such as material (im)permanence, vernacular construction and displacement scenography. As a publisher, he co-founded the collective ATLAS Projectos in 2008, currently managed by Sena and Nuno da Luz. All publications are designed by the collective collaboration, and edited in close with the authors, artists, writers, and editors. Each project follows its own logic of production and print run.
